A dental veneer is like a fake fingernail glued to the front of your tooth. It's permanent, it stays on, it does not come off. It’s used to enhance the color, size, shape, and alignment of your teeth for cosmetic reasons. It’s not there to add function or necessarily strength to the tooth, but rather to enhance your appearance.
A dentist would recommend using veneers if you're not happy with the color of your teeth, if there are teeth that are misaligned or slightly rotated, or if there's something about the size or shape of your teeth that you don't like.
Crowns focus more on the function of the tooth and give it strength, while veneers focus mainly on cosmetics. For example, if you have a broken tooth or a tooth with large fillings where the tooth might be compromised, we'd probably recommend a crown.
The process begins with a consultation to discuss what you don't like about your smile. Then, we prepare your teeth to receive the veneers by reducing your tooth just the thickness of the veneer. When you leave, you will have temporary veneers. The permanent veneers are made and placed a week to three weeks later.
Yes, if you want them to. Sometimes we don't want to match the color of the tooth underneath if the patient wants a different color. But if you have mostly good natural teeth and just one that is off, we can make the veneer match your natural tooth.
Composite veneers don't last quite as long and can pick up stains a bit more. They're also less expensive than porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers resist stain, have a longer lifespan, and cost more.
You should care for them like your natural teeth. Brush them, floss them, use mouthwash, and see your dentist for regular cleanings. Avoid using your front teeth for tasks they're not meant for, such as biting fishing line or opening plastic wrappers.
The cost can vary. Composite veneers could be as little as $200 to $500 or $600. Porcelain veneers may be around $1,000 and could go up as high as $1,700 or $1,800. It depends on what we're doing and how many teeth are involved.
Yes, we have partnered with several different financing companies that are specific to dentistry or at least medical. They offer different plans and programs to fit the needs of patients.
Sometimes, but often they don't. Insurance companies are there to make you healthy, they don't care about aesthetics. However, we generally look up your insurance before you come in for your visit to see what they will and won't do.
