Invisalign can best be explained by comparing it to traditional braces. Traditional braces involve metal brackets glued to your teeth with a wire that applies pressure to move them in the desired direction. In contrast, Invisalign applies a white filling material to the surface of your tooth and then slides a clear, hard-to-see tray over it. This tray applies pressure to move your teeth in the direction we want them to go. Many people prefer Invisalign because it's less noticeable and easier to wear.
Traditional braces have brackets and a wire that can rub your cheeks and lips, causing discomfort. Additionally, food can get caught in the brackets during meals. With Invisalign, you can remove them while eating, allowing you to eat without the worry of food getting caught, and you can brush and floss your teeth as usual. There are no brackets or wires to rub your cheeks and lips, making Invisalign a more comfortable option for many people.
In most cases, Invisalign is faster. Approximately 80 or 90% of patients qualify for Invisalign, indicating that their tooth movements aren't as complex and generally move quicker. However, some more complex tooth movements with traditional braces may take a bit longer.
Invisalign does not have brackets and wires that can rub your cheeks or result in food getting caught up. You can remove them when you want to, making it easier to brush and floss your teeth. Invisalign doesn't rub against your cheeks or gums, so there are no sore spots, making it a more comfortable option for many.
The treatment time with Invisalign can range from six months to 24 months, depending on the complexity of the case and the condition of your teeth. For minor tooth movement involving a few teeth, six months is probably all it will take. But if it's a full-blown case where everything needs to move, it could take up to 24 months.
The process begins with a consultation where we'll examine your teeth, discuss your goals, and perform a digital scan to create a virtual model of your teeth on a computer. We'll then consult with Invisalign to devise a treatment plan. At your next appointment, we'll apply the little tabs on your teeth and put your first set of trays in. You will then trade out the trays every two, four, six weeks, depending on your specific case.
Invisalign trays are clear trays that fit over your teeth, custom made to fit only your teeth. Each series of trays is designed to move the teeth a little bit until it gets to the next stopping point. The number of trays you get really depends on how many teeth we're moving and where we're moving them. The further we have to move the teeth, the more trays we'll have.
Yes, you do. You wear them during the day and sleep with them. They're thin and not uncomfortable. You just take them out to eat and to brush your teeth.
Yes, some complex cases may not be suitable for Invisalign and may require surgery. However, only about 10 or 15% of cases are too complex for Invisalign. We can discuss this during your consultation appointment. The odds are in your favor that you are a good Invisalign candidate.
Invisalign can fix minor crossbites. However, for complex cases, traditional braces or possibly surgery may be required.
No, Invisalign is not painful. It applies gentle pressure to move the teeth, making it quite comfortable. You may experience a little bit of soreness in your teeth when you switch a tray, but in general, you won't have a lot of pain.
Yes, most dental insurance plans that cover orthodontic treatment will also cover Invisalign. We pride ourselves on working with your insurance to guide you on what your insurance will and won't cover.
As I am not a Medicaid provider, I am not entirely sure. Generally speaking, Medicaid's not going to do a lot for adults, but for kids, they may cover Invisalign or maybe braces.
The cost of Invisalign without dental insurance is around $4,500. However, this price may vary depending on the complexity of the case.
